I’m sure most of you must have come across this story on Facebook or some other social media. Let’s revisit it.
A daughter goes to her mother all unhappy and sad with the present situation in her life. She tells her woes to her mother, who, in turn, boils 3 pots of water and puts in carrots, eggs and coffee beans in each of the pot. They wait for some time; the daughter gets restless but her mother pacifies her and asks to wait.
After a few more minutes, the mother turns off the flames and fishes out the carrots and eggs. She asks her daughter to describe about the carrots turning soft and eggs turning hard. She shows the pot of coffee and asks her to describe that too whereupon the daughter says that the beans have released an aroma. The story concludes by the mother explaining about the reactions of 3 different things facing the same situation.
She emphasizes on the reaction of the coffee beans and asks her daughter to have patience till the unfavourable phase passes away.
Memories refreshed, let’s have a look at the same story with a different perspective.
The story emphasises on the way we need to take charge of the situations life gives us. I find this story quite intriguing. Although more emphasis is given to the coffee beans and suggested to be like them, I believe that each of the 3 things that went into the boiling pot has a lesson to teach.
- The carrots went in hard; came out soft. It sends out the message that after a lot of hurdles and problems one might face during a hard phase, the results will be fruitful; which goes on to say that after every night comes a beautiful day.
- The eggs went in soft; came out hard. When one thinks that life could be super easy, he/she might face adversities. When life poses problems that are hard to handle, one needs to keep calm and be patient on working towards overcoming them. This experience may help him/her to become strong emotionally, as that is the main component in a human life and face any situations henceforth.
- The coffee beans are, as everyone knows, bitter; yet, they let out an aroma when put in boiling water. It gives the message that whatever bitter or bad experiences one may have, he/she must not let those affect his/her future experiences. The lesson taught by the bitter experience should not be forgotten, however, it does not justify that that experience should influence a bright prospect.
Suppress the bitterness, Spread the taste!
So the next time you see a person in the state of either the carrots, eggs or coffee beans, do remember this perspective and convey the same! ☺
